Does Aid Matter?

Should we spend so much on Aid? What does ,the money get spent on anyway? How do we know it’s spent well?

International Aid is currently facing a lot of scrutiny. If scrutiny leads to better results, and more effective aid, it is positive for recipients. We should never simply assume all Aid is good, and should ensure it is open and can stand up to challenge. BUT aid sceptics often damn all aid which is dangerous for poor countries that rely on it. We need to increase public knowledge and understanding to ensure support for aid, and helps the UK Government to follow through with its commitment to increasing aid to 0.7% of our gross national income in 2013 (it’s at about 0.5% now).

But do you feel you don’t know enough about Aid to join this debate? Then Aid Matters is for you! Each month we’ll be discussing a different aspect of Aid – What is it? What makes it good, bad or ugly?! What is ‘Beyond Aid’? What can we do? There will be a chance to share views and opinions as well as learning more about this vital tool which helps millions around the world fight their own way out of poverty.

Intrigued? Come and find out more! We’ll be meeting the second Wednesday of every month, starting on 8th Feb…..
